Hurry, this is your last chance to enter the VALENTINE CARD contest

We hope you saw the recent Post article that Melissa Martin wrote about the Valentine Card Design Contest.  This is Brunswick Art Works third year offering this opportunity to artists ages 5 through adult, and we are quickly winding down.  Hurry and put those final touches on your entries and make sure they are at City Hall before the deadline.  Even though you may not be an artist, you know someone who is, maybe your son or daughter, or a grandchild, niece or nephew.  Please, encourage them to participate!

This contest is not limited to BAW members - anyone can enter.

Entries must be dropped off at City Hall or Karen's Hallmark before 5 PM Tuesday, January 18th.

Thanks for your participation and support!

A very special thanks to Galley Printing, Karen's Hallmark, The Post, and Baskets Galore for their donations and support of this contest.

Only four months away!

The excitement is almost palpable...we're gearing up for our annual members' exhibition which will be held from May 18 through May 21 at the Brunswick Library.  This is going to be our best show yet...we can just feel it!  All members of Brunswick Art Works, 18-years-old and above, are invited to submit their finest two and three-dimensional art. Pre-registration is required and the drop-off date for artwork is Monday, May 16.  The show will open on Wednesday, May 18, with an awards reception that evening.  Juror for this exhibit is nationally-known award winner, Mel Grunau, who is a founding member of  The Ohio Watercolor Society. Prospectus, along with additional information, will be available soon.  Of course, we are willing to share the excitement, so if you are interested in being involved with the planning of this exhibit, please contact Julie Zabkar (jzabmom@gmail.com) or Lee Beuther (lbeutherart@gmail.com) as soon as possible.

Brunswick Song...Bud Preston...and YOU

Why not have a song written about Brunswck?  That is the question that was raised by Barbara McGreer, a Brunswick resident, Trustee with the Medina County Arts Council and Trustee with Brunswick Art Works. Why not indeed?

Thanks to Barb's suggestion, in the fall of 2010, BAW contacted Medina County resident and well-known artist, Bud Preston and contracted with  him to create the music for a Brunswick Song.  When Brunswick City Council recently adopted the song officially as the City's song, Bud Preston was there and played the song, and was presented with a certificate by Brunswick Mayor, Gary Werner.

Now comes YOUR part.  Brunswick Art Works will soon be announcing contest rules for a contest to write lyrics for the music just adopted.  We will have current information posted on this blog, and that information, along with the music, will also be available on the City's website (http://www.brunswick.oh.us/) for anyone interested in entering the contest or just listening to the music.

Do you haiku?

Perhaps you are more comfortable with blank verse...or, maybe sonnets...

Whatever form your poetry takes, you are welcome to share the mic at Kelly's Cafe, 1661 Pearl Rd. Brunswick, on Open Mic Night, January 13 at 7:00 PM.

Brunswick Art Works sponsors monthly poetry readings on the 2nd Thursday of every month, and this month it's your turn to shine.

Glen Kuban - paleontologist and artist...a melding of two worlds...

Glen Kuban
Mark your calenders now for Wednesday, February 2, when Glen Kuban will be bringing his fascinating story to Brunswick Artworks, speaking about fossil replicas and paleontology-related art.

Glenn has had a lifelong interest in fossils, and as a kid would lay on his bedroom floor and draw dinosaurs for hours. He graduated from the College of Wooster in 1980 with a degree in biology and planned to teach high school science (which he did on and off over the years). However, he spent most of his career as a computer programmer, while doing fossil related research and collecting on the side. After learning various molding and casting techniques while working on dinosaur tracks (and solving a mystery about them) in the 1980's and 1990's, he began casting other kinds of fossils. Glen now spends much of his time making and marketing fossil replicas.  He is also active in the North Coast Fossil Club in Cleveland, and enjoys writing and teaching about paleontology and prehistoric life.

 OH, WHAT A NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brunswick Art Works celebrated their 6th anniversary yesterday with a fabulous, family-oriented party!  Cake was enjoyed amidst giggles and sometimes rousing laughter as caricature artist, Rob Weske, shared the story of his most interesting and unusual rise to fame.  After Rob created a couple of caricatures of guests, the entire group was encouraged to try their hand at it.  Rob forgot to tell the crowd that it wasn't really as easy as he makes it seem, which resulted in more than a few guffaws as the guests tried their hand at this very specialized art form.

Happy Birthday BAW!

The finished piece by Rob Weske!

Can you figure out who Sharon Borror drew?  Hint to follow...
A popular subject, this is Tim Smith's caricature of Bill Beuther

Tim Smith is apparently very pleased with Bill Beuther's depiction

Vince Carl shows the great job Misty Ricco did capturing his likeness!
