Meet the Artist: Gerri Powell

The truth is, it never occurred to Gerri to do anything different.  Art is what Gerri does and will continue to do.  She loves art history, she enjoys the challenges of creating and surprises even herself when a ‘working’ piece of art ‘begins to fall in place.

Throughout her life, she always wanted to be a teacher and after some time, she knew she wanted to specialize in the teaching of art.  Her dream finally became a reality, in 1991. After some time in the Parma school system, Gerri’s’ life took a few turns.  The last of the kids left.  She and her husband decided to travel, she had time to create.  This is where Gerri’s Circle of Interest story begins…and it is the continuation of her life long journey.  She is interested in genealogy, (is in fact a Daughter of the American Revolution), history and she enjoys creating.  She welcomes the challenge using a variety of different media presents.

Gerri’s art has taken on a variety of forms over the years.  Her first real rendering (a perspective drawing her grandmother ‘saved’ that someone discovered in some of her papers) surfaced.  She had saved it since 1962.  In college she created an old car using a variety of papers, a diffused light bulb using small coffee creamer cups, cut up wood (her father’s yard tools were the perfect circles once sliced) to create a wall hanging.  Out of clay she has created a likeness of her husbands’ hunting boot, she sculpted her own likeness (which her kids hide in different places outside), recently she has created outhouses, miniature (to scale) doll-house figures, etc.  Some of those early creations were kept by her professors, some were given away, some are in the basement and the location of the rest are unknown.

Regardless of where her art ends up we know she will continue to create.  She will continue to challenge herself, she will continue to grow artistically and she will continue to promote art.

Brunswick Song
By Dana Langshaw
April, 2011

Anywhere I've gone
Anything I've seen
Nothing beats this city
Where the grass always grows green.

Filled with many people
With hopes and big dreams
Will always come back home
to the place that holds they key

Yeah, Brunswick's here for me
It gives me everything
To cherish and to hold
Brunswick is my home.

Since 1815
When the founders came to be
And built the land we see
They love it just like me

Anywhere I've gone
Anything I've seen
Nothing beats this city
Where the grass always grows green.

Filled with many people
With hopes and big dreams
Will always come back home
to the place that holds they key

Yeah, Brunswick's here for me
It gives me everything
To cherish and to hold
Brunswick is my home.

Look into the sky
We shine off blue and white
Our city makes us proud
From three oh three to town.

It gives us all we need
With friends and family
Nothing can replace
The hills, the land, the space.

Anywhere I've gone
Anything I've seen
Nothing beats this city
Where the grass always grows green.

City Council concurred with the recommendation of the Lyrics Review Committee at the Committee-of-the-Whole meeting and Legislation is being drafted to adopt Dana's lyrics as the official lyrics for the Brunswick Song..

Glen Kuban - paleontologist and artist...a melding of two worlds...

Glen Kuban will be bringing his fascinating story to Brunswick Artworks on Wednesday, April 6, speaking about fossil replicas and paleontology-related art.

Glenn has had a lifelong interest in fossils, and as a kid would lay on his bedroom floor and draw dinosaurs for hours. He graduated from the College of Wooster in 1980 with a degree in biology and planned to teach high school science (which he did on and off over the years). However, he spent most of his career as a computer programmer, while doing fossil related research and collecting on the side. After learning various molding and casting techniques while working on dinosaur tracks (and solving a mystery about them) in the 1980's and 1990's, he began casting other kinds of fossils. Glen now spends much of his time making and marketing fossil replicas.  He is also active in the North Coast Fossil Club in Cleveland, and enjoys writing and teaching about paleontology and prehistoric life.
