Featured Artist for September Wed 5

Wednesday    Sept. 5th

7:30 P.M.

                  Brunswick City Hall

                     4095 Center Road.

Marleen Farley is our featured artist for September 2012.

Maureen Farley is inspired by the grace and beauty of animals and the natural world. She has enjoyed a lifelong love of painting and drawing which lead to a B. A. degree from the University of Nevada in psychology and fine art. Her artistic achievements include receiving the Douglas County Historical Association Photography award, the Carson Valley Library Award, as well as many awards from the Nevada Artist Association and Western Nevada College.
Her favorite media are colored pencil, digital photography, and transparent acrylic collage. She is known for painting original harmonious images of birds and animals.
"At this time I am exploring mixed media and collage to produce free flowing abstract assemblages." The assemblages appear to have a fluid quality as they represent the interaction between mankind and our natural environment. She arranges interesting found objects such as colorful rocks or leaves with man made materials including transparent glass and beads.
The creations are designed to be felt as well as seen due to the depth of the textural qualities. After she fuses the elements aesthetically they are permanently sealed with a non yellowing transparent acrylic glaze.
She has been selected to join the Avant-Garde Art and Craft Shows organization  in North East Ohio.

Barbra Bloom at Brunswick Art Works

The BAW meeting for August will be presented by Barbra Bloom.

Wednesday, August 1                           Brunswick City Hall
 7:30 P.M.  free                                    4095 Center Road.
                                                                   Brunswick, Ohio 44212
Meet this artist:
Barbara's art is Japanese silk dying known as Shibori.  This is a process involved in knotting silk. Dye is then applied resulting in rich floral forms. Her work has been juried into Clifton Arts and is in many galleries. Listen as she carefully explains, shows examples and answers questions.

Barbara was born in Cleveland, and has been a lifelong resident of Northeastern Ohio.  She currently makes her home in Parma with husband Steve and two dogs.

Barbara holds a masters degree in Public Administration from the Levine College of Cleveland State University, and has worked in the health care arena for many years.

Barbara is the owner and artist of Images in Bloom studios, offering luxurious homemade soaps, hand dyed silk scarves, up-cycled “Reblooming Bags” made from plastic grocery bags, and unique pieces of wire crochet jewelry on the web and at local shows and galleries.

Barbara is self taught and practices the art of Japanese silk dying known as Shibori which involves knotting and binding the silk in preparation for the dye process.  Dye is carefully applied to the silk and the knots and bindings act as a barrier which results in rich floral forms.  As a play on the last name, Bloom, every effort is made to create floral patterns in the dye process.  Her silk has been juried into the Textile Art Alliance , an arm of the Cleveland Museum of Art; and the Tremont Art and Culture Festival for the past two years.  In addition her work has been juried into Clifton Arts and has been included in a gallery display titled Woven in Nature, at the Lake Park System Penitentiary Glen center this past spring.

Up-cycling has also been a key component of the work, bringing new life to grocery bags, and old sweater yarn.  Reuse of supplies of plastic bags in creative forms reduces the volume of landfill while making a statement about the commitment to green living.

Barb maintains a blog that documents art projects, and development of her business news at http://imagesinbloom.wordpress.com

A Breath of Celtic Ayre

Tiffany Lingle (photo by Dina Elizabeth Photography)
A patchwork presentation of traditional music from the British Isles on the Celtic harp
Tiffany Lingle grew up in a home where a love of music was instilled by a musical mother, and loved singing and playing the piano by ear from a young age. Over the years she developed a taste for the "mournfully happy" sound of the Celtic genre. She started teaching herself to play on a small folk harp purchased in 2007. It was addicting.

What started out as a whim has grown into a passion for studying and performing the traditional music of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England on the Celtic, or lever, harp.

Tiffany enjoys arranging music and competing at the Ohio Scottish Games harp competition in the summer. Some of her other experiences include attending the Ohio Scottish Arts School for harp (hosted each year by Oberlin College), as well as performing at weddings, funerals, Irish festivals, dinner banquets and church services.

Join us as we are treated to the lilting sounds of the Celtic Harp, performed by Tiffany.  The program will be held at 7:30 PM, Wednesday, April 4, in the council chambers of Brunswick City Hall, 4095 Center Road, Brunswick.

Meet the Artist: Gerri Powell

The truth is, it never occurred to Gerri to do anything different.  Art is what Gerri does and will continue to do.  She loves art history, she enjoys the challenges of creating and surprises even herself when a ‘working’ piece of art ‘begins to fall in place.

Throughout her life, she always wanted to be a teacher and after some time, she knew she wanted to specialize in the teaching of art.  Her dream finally became a reality, in 1991. After some time in the Parma school system, Gerri’s’ life took a few turns.  The last of the kids left.  She and her husband decided to travel, she had time to create.  This is where Gerri’s Circle of Interest story begins…and it is the continuation of her life long journey.  She is interested in genealogy, (is in fact a Daughter of the American Revolution), history and she enjoys creating.  She welcomes the challenge using a variety of different media presents.

Gerri’s art has taken on a variety of forms over the years.  Her first real rendering (a perspective drawing her grandmother ‘saved’ that someone discovered in some of her papers) surfaced.  She had saved it since 1962.  In college she created an old car using a variety of papers, a diffused light bulb using small coffee creamer cups, cut up wood (her father’s yard tools were the perfect circles once sliced) to create a wall hanging.  Out of clay she has created a likeness of her husbands’ hunting boot, she sculpted her own likeness (which her kids hide in different places outside), recently she has created outhouses, miniature (to scale) doll-house figures, etc.  Some of those early creations were kept by her professors, some were given away, some are in the basement and the location of the rest are unknown.

Regardless of where her art ends up we know she will continue to create.  She will continue to challenge herself, she will continue to grow artistically and she will continue to promote art.

Come fly with J.E. Stanley

J.E. Stanley
(Photo by John Burroughs and Dianne Borsenik)
Join us on December 9th to hear  J.E. Stanley,  an accountant and on again/off again guitarist from the grayscale suburban wilderness of Northeastern Ohio where he is lucky enough to hang out with the Deep Cleveland Poets and the Cleveland Speculators.  He is the author of Dark Intervals (vanZeno Press), Dissonance (Deep Cleveland Press) and co-author, with Joshua Gage, of Intrinsic Night (Sam's Dot Publishing).  His work has appeared in Amaze, Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, Dwarf Stars, the Deep Cleveland Junkmail Oracle, Paper Crow, Raven Electrick, The Rhysling Anthology, Scifaikuest, Sein und Werden, Star*Line, Sybil's Garage and numerous other mainstream and genre publications.  He continues to assert that, winged or not, Man was always intended to fly; the moon and stars were just put there as an incentive.
